First thing – clean everything. Dust, dirt, and spills create a perfect breeding ground for mold and bugs. Wipe down wood, vacuum fabric, and let each item dry completely before it goes into a box or storage unit.

Choose the right covering. Breathable furniture covers or cotton sheets let air circulate, while plastic wrap locks in moisture and can cause mold. If you must use plastic, add a few small ventilation holes.

Control humidity. Most mold problems happen when the air is above 60% humidity. A small dehumidifier or a few silica gel packets inside the storage space can make a big difference. Check the unit on a rainy day; if it feels damp, move items to a drier spot.

Watch the floor. Direct contact with a concrete floor can lead to moisture wicking into wood legs. Place a layer of cardboard, plywood, or inexpensive pallets under each piece. This also helps protect against scratches.

Before you load anything, measure the unit and the furniture. Finally, do a quick walkthrough when you first arrive at the storage facility. Look for signs of water leaks, pests, or strong odors. If the unit isn’t clean, ask the manager for another space. A clean, dry environment is the best insurance for your furniture.
